Legend Behind the Dance Pakarena




Pakarena Dance is a traditional dance from South Sulawesi were accompanied by two drum heads (Gandrang) and a pair of instrument devices such as the flute (puik-puik) . In addition to dance Pakarena which has been played by the maestro Daeng Pakarena Maccoppong Rannu (late) in Gowa district, there are also other types of dance Pakarena derived from the district Selayar "Dance Pakarena Gantarang". Called as Dance Pakarena Gantarang because this dance comes from a village which is the center of the island kingdom in the past Selayar on the Gantarang Lalang Bata. Dance played by approximately four female dancers was first displayed in the 17th century precisely 1903 when Pangali Patta King crowned as King in Gantarang Lalang Bata .

There is no data that says since when this dance there and who created this dance Gantarang Pakarena but people believe that dance Pakarena Gantarang associated with the emergence of Tumanurung. Tumanurung an angel come down from heaven to give directions to people on earth. The directions given in the form of a symbol - a symbol of the movement later known as Dance Pakarena Gantarang. It is almost similar to what is told by one of the players Munasih Nadjamuddin Dance Pakarena Makassar.
